Cameron is one of the senior swimmers on the team this year. He is a phenomenal swimmer as well as an all around great guy. He was elected Captain for the season with Peter Ferguson and, in my opinion, did a great job. Cameron made a big mistake during the season this year and got busted drinking at a party. Because of this, he was stripped of his Captain-ship, made to apologize and tell the entire team what he did, had to skip 2 weeks of practice and meets, and was not eligible for a single award at the Awards Banquet, his Senior one.
I did not feel good about this. Cameron is a superstar, is all facets of his life. I adore him and I think he got a raw deal. I'm not saying I condone his drinking, although, come on. He's a senior for goodness sake, there are not many kids his age not dabbling in Boones Farm (at least that was my drink of choice at that point in my life:)). So, after leaving the Awards Banquet and thinking about this quite a bit, I decided I would make him an MVP award, unofficial of course and kind of lame, but an award nonetheless. I wrapped it up and put it in his locker with a card telling him most of this (minus the understanding about the drinking part, of course). It certainly made me feel better about the situation and according to the email I received from him, he was super surprised and appreciative of it, which made me happy.
