Cyrus was born with hypospadias. His urethral opening was formed slightly below the tip of his penis and he has an actual pseudo opening on the tip so it looks totally normal. We took him to the Dr. in Colorado on request of his pediatrician to discuss possible corrections if need be. The Dr. at that time wanted to do surgery to correct it but couldn't give me a good reason why except that he may be embarrassed of it aesthetically when he is is the locker room with the boys in high school. This did not seem like a valid reason to put him out under anesthesia and perform surgery on his penis. So, I opted out, I think Brad was more interested in entertaining the idea but I was firm in my decision on this one. The Dr. did say that the urethra opening may not grow with the penis and cause him to have painful urination at some point in his life. Our Dr. in VA has asked me to bring him back to the urologist here since he will be 3 in a few weeks and wanted to make sure everything was developing as planned. I think that it is fine, he doesn't have any problem urinating or any abnormal pain associated with his penis but we'll see what the Dr. says today. We are on a new Heath Insurance plan this year, it's a high deductible plan with a $10 premium monthly. We have an HSA associated with the plan and I put a couple hundred dollars a month in which will hopefully be enough to cover any medical issues we have this year...we'll see. It's a gamble for sure. The deductible is $4000 out of pocket and then 100% coverage after that. I think today's "meet & greet" is a minimum of $200...got to love the healthcare system.
Update: All is well, it is a very mild case and does not need surgery. I could have told him that for $200 bucks! Ouch.
