Bear Creek 10 Miler
This trail run is on the Willis River Trail at Bear Creek Lake State
Park in Cumberland, Virginia (about 45 minutes from Richmond). It is a
five-mile, out and back trail, passing through the Piedmont Hills of
Cumberland State Forest and Bear Creek Lake State Park. The run is 95%
trail and about 5% dirt road. There are not any significant elevation
changes but the trail crosses five creeks and has numerous short hills. The temp was supposed to be about 50* for the start but was barely pushing 32* by the time we arrived out there. It was COLD. I had 3 layers on top and my CO running tights on the bottom and was super chilly for the majority of the run. The trail was hard, single track the whole way (minus a brief interlude on a fire road) and lots of obstacles (roots, stumps, logs, creeks, etc...). Creighton went down in the first mile and I rolled my ankle about 6 times throughout this race. I was praying that I wouldn't break anything! We had a good pace and finished strong in 1:39. I finished 2nd in my age group (5th girl over all) and C finished 3rd in his age group. It was a great race.
