Brad, Emma and I took 14 kids on a camping and canoeing adventure last weekend. We have been planning this trip for awhile and when the time came, it was pretty unfortunate that the weather took a bit of a turn for the colder/wetter. We were planning on doing a 2 day paddle in the canoes with progress of about 7 miles per day. However, the air temp was about 54* and the water temp was 62* which could definitely lead to hypothermia pretty quickly had one of the boats tipped over. So, we changed out plans a bit and did a short 2 mile paddle on Saturday and spent the rest of the day hiking and hanging around the camp. I put the kids through an intense Seal Team workout (of course) for about 45 minutes and they were pooped, so was I. Actually, it took the entire week for my legs/butt to stop being sore. That program destroys me.
Sunday was even colder so we took a vote to see what the kids wanted to do. They said they wanted to do the same short paddle we had done on Saturday so we agreed to do that with them and it was fun. The kids had a blast and I'm glad we followed through with it.
For the food, I had it planned down to the raisin. I was pretty proud of myself. It's always a gamble as to how much food to buy for a group that big and on this trip we ate everything. It was awesome. I found this cool idea on pinterest.com for campfire cones which involved getting a waffle cone and filling it with chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, toffee bits, and marshmallows, then wrapping it in foil and putting it in the fire so it gets melty. It was awesome! Saturday morning we did chocolate chip pancakes and bacon, lunch was bagel sandwiches both days with cheese, avocados, jalapenos, pickles, tomatoes, onions, etc..., dinner was turkey burgers, chicken burgers, and regular burgers. It was so yummy and so easy. I am getting good at cooking for large groups around a campfire, I actually think it would be harder to do in my own house.
